School-Based Support Team

P.S. 135 offers a range of support services to cater to the diverse needs of our students. These services include speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy (which require a doctor's evaluation and prescription), as well as hearing and vision screening. Related services encompass developmental, corrective, and other supportive services that are implemented to assist a child with a disability to function to the best of their ability. Your child’s related services may change from pre-school to school age as their needs change. Related services may be the only special education service provided to your child, or they may be offered in conjunction with special education services.

The School-Based Support Team (SBST) is a team that consists of a School Psychologist, School Social Worker, and Family Worker. The SBST can conduct an initial evaluation for students without an IEP and re-evaluations for students with an IEP. Beyond their role in evaluating students for Special Education services, these professionals also provide essential support services to all students and their parents or guardians. Their dedication ensures that our school community receives the comprehensive support it needs.

Things to Consider

If you think your child may need special education services, keep in mind that:

  • Children learn and develop at different speeds and in different ways.

  • Children who learn differently do not necessarily have a disability.

  • Children should not be referred for special education services because of limited English proficiency.
